Dual Enrollment/Accelerated Program

Dual Enrollment Program

The Dual Enrollment program allows high school students to take college courses and receive both high school and college credit. This program is available to students who attend a public high school or a private high school that is accredited by SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools). This program is only available to school systems that have entered into Dual Enrollment contract agreement with Jefferson State Community College.

Accelerated Program

The Accelerated program is available to high school students who attend a private school that is not accredited by SACS and to students who are home-schooled. This program awards college credit only.

Eligibility

To be eligible for dual enrollment each student must meet the following criteria:

  • Meet the entrance requirements established by JSCC; Have a 'B” average in completed high school courses
  • Have written approval of the appropriate principal and the superintendent (via signatures on the application
  • Be in grades 10, 11 or 12; Students must re-apply every semester (High school students can not apply online)
  • The application must be complete (including signatures) before the student will be allowed to register
Courses Available

Any college level course in English, foreign languages, mathematics, science, or social science; any occupational/technical courses; or any courses agreed upon by the school system and the college. Students are strongly encouraged to select courses on the STARS guide as these are guaranteed to transfer to any public school in the state of Alabama.

Students must meet the course prerequisites prior to enrollment in any of these courses. Students may not enroll in developmental courses (college courses below the 100 level), physical education courses, nor may they enroll in any course on an audit basis under the Dual Enrollment program.

Dual Enrollment students must meet prerequisite requirements for any course. Prerequisites may be met by completion of the placement test and/or minimum levels on the ACT in English and Mathematics. When contacting Jefferson State, you must identify yourself as a high school student in order to receive the correct information.

Application Process

Eligible students may pick up a Dual Enrollment application from their high school guidance counselor or the Office of Enrollment Services at the Jefferson, Shelby-Hoover Campuses or the St. Clair Site. Students should complete the college application and return completed forms along with any necessary proof of prerequisites to Office of Enrollment Services.

Registration Process

Students in the Dual Enrollment program may take their coursework at any of Jefferson State's locations. Students should consult the class schedule or the academic advising centers for information on the dates, times, and locations of courses.

Jefferson State also offers Dual Enrollment courses at selected high school sites.
The registration date for students taking classes on his/her high school campus are determined by the high school and Jefferson State. See your guidance counselor for details.

Dates

In an attempt to consolidate questions, processing of applications and registration of Dual Enrollment students, Jefferson State will be holding registration on campus. All students must attend, and those who cannot attend will need to contact me for an appointment. In order to register the student will need a completed application (including signatures), copy of ACT scores (if applicable) and tuition.

Cost

Costs for courses are dependent upon the course credit hours. Most courses at Jefferson State are 3-4 semester hours. Click here for the current tuition & fee schedule. Cost may differ for students taking classes on the high school campus. Payment is due at time of registration.

Financial aid is not available for high school students. Those families who participate in the PACT program may use these funds to pay for Dual Enrollment courses.
