Student Advising Check List

 1.

Gather relevant decision-making information.
   
____ Read the Jefferson State Community College Catalog and Student Handbook and visit the College’s website http://www.jeffstateonline.com
____   Find out your advisor’s name, e-mail address, office location and office hours.
____ If you plan to transfer to a four -year college or university, visit the STARS website (accessible from http://www.jeffstateonline.com) for transfer information and potential transfer institutions within the state.
____ If you do not plan to transfer and will complete an AAS degree and certificate contact the appropriate program advisor at Career Program Advisors
____ Explore your career goals and options at One Stop Center
____ If you will receive scholarships, grants and/or loans, check with the Financial Aid Office to verify you have received aid.  Remember that you must re-apply for financial aid for each new school year.
   
2. Make appointments.

Make an appointment during Advising Week.  Generally advising week is three weeks before the end of each semester and is always advertised.  We strongly encourage you to meet with your advisor during or before this time.
____  Upon receipt of your PDF card, verify that your information is correct and notify the Records office to change/correct information.
   
3. Prepare for the meeting with your advisor.
   
 ____ Read and review the class schedule for the appropriate term
 ____ Make a trail schedule of tentative course selections (Use Schedule at the end of this section.)
 ____ Make a list of specific questions and information that you need from your advisor.
 ____ Make your advisor aware of your work schedule and other responsibilities/obligations
 ____ Be on time and expect to spend at least 30 minutes with your advisor.
   
4. Advising meeting
   
____ Evaluate your career goals
____ Verify your major and address
____ Discuss your current academic status and progress
____ Review the requirements and completed course work for your major
   
5.  Registration and payment
   
 ____ Register for classes with your advisor during your advising appointment
 ____ Use your PIN to register on-line
 ____ Remember Tuition Is Due At The Time Of Registration.   Failure To Pay Tuition Will Result In Being Dropped From Your Classes For Non-Payment
 ____ Students receiving Financial Aid should contact the Financial Aid Office and follow their instructions.
