Bridges
to the Baccalaureate
Introduction
The
Bridges to the Baccalaureate Program is a facet of a larger National
Institutes of Health (NIH) initiative to increase the number of
minorities training for and entering the biomedical sciences. The
University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and Jefferson State
Community College (JSCC) have been "Bridge" sponsoring
institutions since 1999.
About the Program
The Bridges program is divided into two phases,
academic and research.
The academic component consists of students
focusing on their didactic course work during the fall and spring term
and preparing for the research phase. Preparation for the research phase
includes working in a JSCC lab, learning scientific techniques used in
basic science research and attending scheduled seminars at UAB and JSCC.
The research phase consists of students spending
40 hours per week at UAB participating in basic science or social
science research under the expert tutelage and guidance of a leading
scientist in the students' field of interest. The research component
affords JSCC students with an opportunity to witness science at work.
This component also provides the student with the opportunity to meet
and network with other undergraduate students from colleges across the
United States and the world.
The research component typically occurs in the
summer however in extreme circumstances the research phase and academic
phase can be shifted.
