The
Associate Degree Clinical Laboratory Technology Program
is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory
Sciences (NAACLS). Successful completion of the program leads to an
Associate in Applied Science Degree & eligibility for national CLT/MLT
certification by such agencies as ASCP and NCA.
Clinical Laboratory Technicians are important
members of health-care provider teams. CLTs perform a variety of chemical
& biological analyses on blood & other specimens to assist physicians in
the diagnosis & treatment of disease. The CLT graduate can choose from a
variety of employment opportunities, including hospital laboratories,
physicians! offices & clinics, public health facilities, and research
institutions. National surveys indicate a need for qualified clinical
laboratory technicians and technologists throughout the country.
Jefferson
State's CLT / MLT Program prepares students for entry into the field of
laboratory medicine in 6 semesters at a reasonable tuition cost. The CLT
Program consists of basic academic courses, CLT courses taught in campus
labs, and clinical experiences in one of several hospitals & reference
laboratories. Students may apply for admission to JSCC during any semester
and register for general education requirements and prerequisites for the
CLT/MLT Program. Admission to the professional sequence requires a grade
of 'C' or higher on the required general education courses and an overall
'C' (2.0 GPA) or higher.
Graduates desiring to pursue a B.S. degree & the
Clinical Laboratory Scientist / Medical Technologist level of
certification are eligible for articulation with the UAB CLS/MT Program.
Admission
to the College and CLT Program
Complete College application (AL 101). All
students seeking admission to the CLT Program must first complete all
College admission requirements.
Request that official transcripts.from high school
& all colleges attended be sent to Enrollment Services & request that
they be evaluated. Transcripts must be on file to be admitted to the CLT
Program.
Take the English & math placement test unless
transfer credit meets college guidelines. The Testing Office in is LWH
219.
Make an appointment with the CLT/MLT Program
Coordinator to plan your program of study, to assure timely completion
of your general education requirements, & to make application to the CLT/MLT
program.
Maintain
overall GPA of 2.00 or above on all college credit, including
Jefferson State credit. Students are admitted to the CLT/MLT Program in
the Summer & Fall semesters. Applications are accepted until the
beginning of Spring term for Summer admission & until the beginning of
Summer term for Fall admission. Students should complete ENG 101, BIO 103,
MTH elective, and humanities elective or PSY 200 before entering CLT/MLT
courses. The CLT clinical component will be completed over the next 5
terms.
Students admitted to the program are expected to
have & maintain a satisfactory level of health, including freedom from
chemical dependency and communicable diseases. A medical examination form
must be submitted as required.
Students progressing to the final semester of the CLT clinical
experience must provide evidence of hospitalization insurance, student
malpractice coverage, and proof of Hepatitis B immunizations prior to
entry into the laboratory clinical rotation.
Students
must maintain a 2.0 GPA or "C" in all required courses without repeated
withdrawals, audits, or failures. Any student whose progression is
interrupted due to failure of a CLT course must apply for readmission
evaluation of eligibility. A student who fails a CLT course (less than a
grade of 'C") may repeat the course only once. Students who fail a CLT
course a second time or who fail 2 CLT courses are not eligible for
continuation of the program.
Before enrolling in the CLT 293-297 courses,
students must have completed all of the required general education & CLT
courses with a grade of 'C' or higher and have an overall 2.0 GPA.
