For dual enrollment courses that employ videoconferencing, instructors can teach from any of the locations as long as he or she is granted approval in advance.  With this said, the primary location should be the home location.

.

Question:
What college libraries do students have access to?  Do they have access to online libraries as well?

Answer:
Dual Enrollment students have access to all of the Jefferson State Community
College library resources.  They also have access to the Alabama Virtual Library.
An AVL card, which allows students to access the AVL off-campus, may be
obtained from the JSCC library or any public library at no charge.  We also have interlibrary agreements with UAB, Lawson State, Miles, and Birmingham
Southern.

Question:
What do instructors need to do if they need to cancel/miss a class?

Answer
:
Contact the high school, the department chair for the subject taught, and Amy Sipper.  Prepare something for students to work on in class. Please contact the Dual Enrollment Office. If possible, someone will proctor your class. Please have assignments ready. Also, call the school counselor as soon as possible so that
arrangements can be made.

Question:
What do I need to do if a Technical Aid must miss a class meeting?
Answer:
This would be a matter for the high school. Report this information to the high school administration immediately.

Question:
What do instructors do about the differences between the high school and college calendars and schedules?
Answer:
The first and last days of class should follow the JSCC calendar.  Although holidays may be different, both JSCC and high school holidays should be observed.  The total number of class minutes should equal the College Calendar (at least 35 hours
or 2,100 minutes, up to 45 hours or 2,700 minutes).

Question:
Is the course comparable to a traditional college class?

Answer
:
Yes, and it should be taught following State and College requirements and standards.
See standard syllabus for each class (available in Liberal Arts, Communications,
etc. Departments) and the College Handbook for guidelines.

Question:
Can instructors discuss a student with his or her parents?

Answer
:
Jefferson State complies with all FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act  of 1974) regulations, which provide that, for high school students, the parents share  the  right to access education records.  Once in college, however, the right to access  education records rests solely with the student.  Because Dual Enrollment students fall in both categories, instructors should obtain the consent of the student  before disclosing the student's education information to the parent.  The high school administration  may, however, share information with the parent without the student's consent.

Question:
Do instructors need to keep attendance records?

Answer
:
Yes, attendance is required at the high school. The student should refer to his or
her high school
Student Handbook for policies.

If the student has an excused high school absence, it is normally excused on our part.
We do require that students notify the instructor advance for any school sponsored
absence and to make up the work in advance.

Question:
Can students use Jefferson State tutoring services?

 Answer:
Yes. JSCC offers free tutoring services in some subjects. In addition, all students enrolled in Math and English courses are provided with Smartthinking online tutoring services.  Please contact the Learning Success Center at 205-856-7952 or
email Edith Mayomi at emayomi@jeffstateonline.com for more information.

Question:
Will Dual Enrollment courses ever be taught from the Jefferson State campus and broadcast to all Dual Enrollment locations via videoconferencing?  If so, when can we expect this to happen?

Answer:
In the future we may explore the feasibility of videoconferencing classes from the Jefferson State campus.  No specific plans are available at this time.

Question:
How involved are the Technical Aids supposed to be with students?

Answer
:
Technical Aids are in place to maintain and operate equipment, dispense information, assist with communication, and proctor exams. Technical Aids should not interfere with any interaction between instructor and student or any assignments.

Question:
What happens if an instructor is scheduled to teach a class and it doesn’t make/gets cancelled?

Answer:
The department chair will try to find another class for the instructor to teach if he or she wants one, but part-time work is not guaranteed if a class does not “make.”

Question:
What should instructors do if they catch a student cheating?

Answer
:
Complete an Academic Dishonesty Report (form) and take action as required in the College Catalog and Student Handbook located online at http://www.jeffstateonline.com/catalog/.

Question:
Do grades have to be numeric?

Answer
:
Please provide the high school counselor with numeric grades as that is what the high school requires. For Jefferson State’s grading purposes, only letter grades are needed.

Question:
Does the “four major errors” rule apply in Dual Enrollment English courses?

Answer
:
Yes.  Refer to the Major Errors Policy in the Communications Department.

Question:
How do instructors communicate with students outside of class?

Answer
:
We are now using WebCT email to communicate with students.  At the beginning of the term, you will have a course site set up in WebCT.

Question:
How are course evaluations conducted?

Answer
:
Course Evaluations are available online for all courses that are set up in WebCT, including Dual Enrollment classes.  Students are able to complete these evaluations anonymously online through their WebCT course sites.

Question:
How do instructors handle final exams?  When are they?

Answer
:
Final exams are given the same week as all other Jefferson State final exams.  They should be given during the regular class time for Dual Enrollment courses.  Students should be given two (2) hours to complete final exams, so you may wish to give a Part I final one day and a Part II final on the other day of class.

Question:
What kind of computer skills do I need?

Answer
:
Instructors will be successful using WebCT if they can navigate the Internet, use email, upload and download attachments, and use Microsoft Word.
