Academic Opportunities

MUS 101 - Music Appreciation

3 semester hours
Prerequisite:   None

This course, offered each semester on multiple campuses, is designed for non-music majors and requires no previous musical experience.  It is a survey course that incorporates several modes of instruction including lecture, guided listening, and concert attendance.  The course will cover the different stylistic periods of western music, provide a multi-cultural perspective, and include both vocal and instrumental genres.  Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of music fundamentals, the aesthetic/stylistic characteristics of historical periods, and an aural perception of style and structure in music.

MUS 110 – Basic Musicianship

3 semester hours
Prerequisite:   None

This course, taught each fall and spring on the Jefferson campus, is designed to provide rudimentary music knowledge and skills for the student with a limited music background.  Topics include a study of notation, rhythm, scales, keys, intervals, chords, and basic sight-singing and ear-training skills.  Upon completion, students should be able to read and understand musical scores and demonstrate basic sight-singing and ear-training skills for rhythm, melody, and harmony.  Whether you want to learn these skills for the first time or brush-up skills you have forgotten, this class can help!

MUS 111s – Music Theory I

4 semester hours
Prerequisite:   MUS 110, suitable placement score, or permission of instructor

This class, taught each fall on the Jefferson campus, is designed to introduce students to more detailed analysis of music fundamentals.  Students interested in pursuing a music degree, as well as those who want a more in-depth understanding of music fundamentals, are encouraged to take this course.  The class includes lecture, visual and aural demonstrations, analysis, as well as an ear-training lab.  Topics include a brief review of music fundamentals (pitch and rhythm notation, scales, intervals, diatonic harmonies, etc.), voice leading, musical analysis, cadences, non-chord tones, ear training, and sight-singing.

MUS 112s – Music Theory II

4 semester hours
Prerequisite:   MUS 111

This class is offered each spring on the Jefferson campus and serves as the continuation of MUS 111.  Similar styles of lecture and lab are used, though the study is more in-depth.  Topics include chorale writing and analysis, diatonic seventh chords, borrowed chords, modulation, and further development of ear training and sight-singing skills.
