Jefferson State’s Communication Honor Society

What is Sigma Chi Eta?

Sigma Chi Eta (SCH) is the official community college honor society of the National Communication Association (NCA). Since 2000, SCH has fostered growth in the Communication discipline among two-year colleges and universities.

The Six Goals of Sigma Chi Eta:

  1. Recognize, foster, and reward outstanding scholastic achievement
  2. Stimulate interest in the field of Communication
  3. Promote and encourage professional development among Communication majors
  4. Provide an opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas about the field
  5. Establish and maintain close relationships and understanding between faculty and students
  6. Explore options for further undergraduate/graduate studies

The eligibility requirements to join Sigma Chi Eta are as follows:

  • Must have completed 9 semester credit hours at their current institution, the equivalent number of hours at a transfer institution, or the equivalent number of hours through life-long learning credit
  • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 for all courses taken
  • Must have completed the equivalent of two courses or 6 semester credit hours in Communication courses (any SPH or MCM; also ENG 101 or BUS 215)
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 3.25 for all Communication courses taken
  • Must currently be enrolled as a student in good standing, as determined by the institution’s policies.

The Zeta Chapter of Sigma Chi Eta

The Zeta Chapter is one of the many chapters that make up the National Honor Society Sigma Chi Eta. The Zeta Chapter was formed in 2014 at Jefferson State to recognize students who not only display excellence in communication-related classes but who also want to learn more about communication, improve their communication skills, and serve the community.

What We Do

The Zeta Chapter participates in service projects and hosts workshops, seminars, and other events related to the field of communication.

Students do not have to be communication majors to join this honor society. Members will have the opportunity to compete for local and national offices and awards, attend conferences, and meet professionals in the field of communication.

Please note: Students who meet eligibility requirements to join this honor society will be invited via letter/email to join each February, June, and September. We accept new members each semester, so if you do not currently meet eligibility requirements, you can apply during a future semester.
