On November 30 – December 1, members of the Jefferson State Speech and Debate Team competed with over 130 students from 19 different colleges and universities at the Deep South Debate Tournament at Mississippi College.
Debate Captain Jacob Humphries and Team Secretary/Treasurer Heaven Sheppard both broke into out-rounds in the novice division of IPDA Debate. In this type of debate, students are assigned as either the Affirmative or Negative speaker and are given 30 minutes to prepare their arguments for a debate that lasts 26 minutes long. The topic changes for each debate round and can range from politics to pop culture to philosophy.
Next semester, the team will compete at tournaments at Louisiana Tech University, Bossier Parrish Community College and at the International Forensics Association Tournament in Berlin, Germany.
