Election Day

Celebrate Women’s History Month by exploring themes in this the 1909 political cartoon “Election Day!” by E.W. Gustin, which illustrates the inspiring women who fought for the right to vote. This cartoon offers a perspective on the women’s suffrage movement, reflecting societal tensions and stereotypes of the time.  We invite you to submit a written rhetorical analysis or a vlog rhetorical analysis of this cartoon, focusing on its visual elements, rhetorical strategies, and historical context. To be considered for the top two awards in either the writing or vlog categories, you must be a current Jefferson State student and adhere to the following guidelines:

1. Length: Your written analysis should be between 500-750 words (two double-spaced typed pages). Your vlog analysis should run between 5-8 minutes.

2. Format: Written analysis should be completed on a Word document with student name and title, and include introduction, body, and conclusion paragraphs; no outside sources – only political cartoon as primary source may be used; absolutely no generative AI or grammar checkers may be used.

3. Vlog analysis can be uploaded as an mp3 file or YouTube link video with a speaker and title introduction and an organized presentation of the analyzed political cartoon; no outside sources – only political cartoon as primary source should be referenced; absolutely no generative AI or grammar checkers may be used.

4. Submission: All entries must be submitted by March 21, 2025 by NOON (12:00 p.m.) through the submission link below.

5. Judging Criteria: Submissions will be evaluated based on clarity, depth of analysis, engagement with the cartoon’s themes, and overall writing or speaking  quality. Winners will be notified via email on March 31, 2025.
