Brunch Event Marks International Women’s Day

The Jefferson State Women’s History Month Committee in collaboration with the Pi Pi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa hosted a special brunch in honor of International Women’s Day on Friday, March 6.

The event, which was held in the Judy Merritt Building on the Shelby-Hoover Campus, featured a keynote speech by Dr. Erin Arnold, Jefferson Campus Biology Chair, and a panel discussion on women shaping a sustainable future and their contributions to environmentalism.

Hispanic Community Initiative Coordinator Deise Valenzuela and PTK member Allison Mboumba served as moderators for the panel. The panel included Arnold; Dr. Stephanie Hansard, Sociology Instructor; Deborah Foster, Center for Workforce Education Career Coach; and Shealynne McCrae with PTK.

“Today, we’ve learned that intersectional sustainability isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a blueprint. It’s about recognizing that we cannot heal the planet without also addressing the systems of power that affect our everyday lives. From the wisdom of our grandmothers to the ‘green economy’ of our future, the responsibility for this work belongs to all of us,” Mboumba said.

Free coffee and brunch was provided for attendees.
