Couey Named JSCC’s 2024 Distinguished Retiree
Tony Couey was named the 2024 Jefferson State Distinguished Retiree at the annual Retiree Luncheon that was held on Nov. 5 in Lurleen Wallace Hall at the Jefferson Campus.
Couey taught Health and Physical Education at JSCC from 1973 until 2022. He was also an assistant baseball coach and assistant basketball coach for several years.
“Tony is the kindest, most caring, most Christian person I have ever known! He says he uses his God given gifts of encouragement and health to help people,” Couey’s nominator wrote.
Examples of Couey’s acts of kindness include purchasing and distributing blankets to homeless people in Birmingham, and taking many people fishing as a way of ministering to them.
Couey became a friend and mentor to a Jefferson State student, who was a single mother of four children. The student would become an honors graduate, and the children have done well.
