Jefferson State Community College Student Government Association Constitution – Ratified June 28, 2024
ARTICLE I
This organization shall be known as the “Jefferson State Community College Student Government Association.”
ARTICLE II
The Student Government Association shall be comprised of a Student Government Association Executive Council and a Student Senate.
ARTICLE III
The Student Government Association Executive Council shall be the executive body of the Student Government Association.
SECTION I – Membership in the Student Government Association Executive Council consists of currently enrolled students at Jefferson State Community College.
SECTION II – The Student Government Association Executive Council shall consist of a President, Vice President for each campus, Secretary, Director of Activities, Director of Communications, and five Senators.
SECTION III – The operating year for the Student Government Association Executive Council shall be for a calendar year beginning in June as outlined in the by-laws.
SECTION IV – Offices that comprise the Student Government Association Executive Council may be added or deleted by the council with the approval of the Student Government Association Advisor. Changes must be approved before June.
ARTICLE IV
The Student Senate shall be an assembly of the student body of Jefferson State Community College through which the students shall exercise their responsibilities as defined in the by-laws.
SECTION I – The Student Senate shall be made up of representatives and senators.
SECTION II – Each SGA-recognized student organization shall appoint one representative from the organization to the Student Senate. This representative shall have all the same rights and responsibilities as the other members of the Student Senate outlined in Article IV and the by-laws.
SECTION III – Senators shall be currently enrolled students at Jefferson State Community College who are appointed or elected by currently enrolled students as set by the Student Elections Committee.
SECTION IV – The operating year for the Student Senate shall be during the fall and spring semester of the academic year.
ARTICLE V
The Student Government Association shall be sponsored by an advisor selected by the Vice President of Student Affairs from the full-time faculty and staff of Jefferson State Community College. The SGA Advisor may seek assistance from other members of the faculty and staff as needed.
ARTICLE VI
Meetings of the Student Senate and Student Government Association Executive Council shall take place regularly throughout the year and shall follow the rules, regulations, and procedures outlined in the by-laws.
SECTION I – Each branch of the Student Senate shall have a minimum of one meeting a during a semester. The Speaker/s of the Senate, with the advice of the Student Government Association Executive Council and Advisor, shall determine the
date, time, and location of each meeting. The Speaker/s of the Senate may call additional meetings when the Speaker/s deems one is needed or when a majority of the Student Senate petitions for one.
SECTION II – The Student Government Association Executive Council shall have a minimum of one meeting a month during its term. The Student Government Association Advisor, with the advice of the Student Government Association Executive Council, shall determine the date, time, and location of each meeting. The Student Government President may call additional meetings when the President deems one is needed or when a majority of the Student Government Association Executive Council petitions for one.
SECTION III – A quorum for the Student Senate shall be when two-thirds of the members are present at any Student Senate meeting.
SECTION IV – A quorum for the Student Government Association Executive Council shall be when three-fourths of the members are present at any Student Government Association Executive Council meeting.
SECTION V – Members of the Student Senate and the Student Government Association Executive Council may use any form of technology, including but not limited to videoconferencing and email, as decided upon by the members of each group to conduct meetings.
ARTICLE VII
All amendments to the Constitution and By-laws shall be sponsored by a member of the Student Government Association and comply with the procedures outlined in the By-laws.
