Chancellor Announces Jefferson State Community College Interim President

Jefferson State Interim President Kieth BrownMONTGOMERY, Alabama — Alabama Community College System Chancellor Mark A. Heinrich announced today that he has appointed Keith A. Brown, Esq. interim president of Jefferson State Community College, effective July 1, 2014. Mr. Brown currently serves as Dean of Campus Development and Legal Services for Jefferson State Community College. Mr. Brown will assume his new duties in the wake of
longstanding president Dr. Judy Merritt’s retirement.

In announcing Mr. Brown’s appointment, Dr. Heinrich commented, “With more than 15 years of educational administration experience at
Jeff State, coupled with his legal background and extensive military career, I think Mr. Brown will provide what this college needs as it
moves forward, and I appreciate his willingness to do so,” he said. “I have complete confidence in Mr. Brown’s ability to provide quality, dependable leadership to the college during this transitional period.”

Mr. Brown began his higher education pursuit as a student at Jefferson State Community College, where he was the College’s only USA Today First Team, AACJC Academic All‐American. After  graduating with honors from Jeff State, he received the Junior College Honors Transfer Scholarship at the University of Alabama. He graduated summa cum laude from The University  and continued his education at The University of Alabama School of Law. While in law
school, he served as Managing Editor of the Journal of Legal Profession and was a Hugo Black Scholar. After receiving his Juris Doctorate, magna cum laude, from The University of Alabama School of Law, he practiced law at Johnston, Barton, Proctor & Powell LLP.
