The Jefferson State Debate Team traveled to the University of Texas at Tyler on February 28-March 2 to compete in the Tournament of Roses IPDA Debate Tournament. After six rounds of preliminary competition, Kelsey Wilson and Zavoun Watts made it into octofinals in the Novice division with 4-2 records. In the Junior Varsity division, Heaven Sheppard was a semi-finalist and had a 5-1 record in preliminary rounds. In addition, Sheppard was ranked as the 3rd Junior Varsity Speaker and Daniel Davis was ranked 4th Junior Varsity Speaker. Speaker awards are given based on the total points assigned by the judges in areas such as organization, refutation, delivery and evidence.
The team will head to the IPDA National Tournament on March 14, hosted by Tennessee Tech University. Anyone interested in the Debate Team should contact Dr. Janice Ralya ([email protected]). Full tuition scholarships are available for qualified students.
