Speech 106!

Learn Intercultural Communication

Have you ever wondered what everyday life is like in other countries? Do you find other cultures fascinating? Do you also need a speech class for your degree plan? If so, then consider enrolling in SPH 106 with Grant Merrill this fall! In addition to learning basic communication theory and public speaking, you will have the opportunity to interact with university students in France. Not only will you gain interesting knowledge about French culture, but you will also get to teach them about your own culture!

Each student in this class will produce an approximately 5-minute video showcasing a “day in the life” of what it’s like to be an American college student. The students in France will produce similar videos about their own lives, and our classes will share these videos with one another.

Here are a few reasons you should consider this class:

  1. Today’s world is becoming increasingly interconnected. This class will give you the communication skills necessary to thrive in a multicultural environment.
  2. You will sharpen your ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds, which will prove beneficial in any career you pursue.
  3. Taking a speech class often alleviates public speaking anxiety. Most people are at least a little nervous when it comes to speaking in front of an audience. By the time you finish this class, you will be speaking with confidence!
  4. The instructor for this class understands what it is like to live with social anxiety and can help ease you in to public speaking.
  5. You will have the opportunity to network with people in another part of the world. This could lead to long-lasting professional connections and friendships.
