Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) has once again exceeded expectations! The Beta Lambda Delta chapter, which won the 2020 International Award for Most Distinguished Chapter, started making big plans for their fall 2020 Honors in Action project many months ago. This year’s theme is “Inheritance and Legacy,” and since 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment, giving women the right to vote, PTK decided to design a project that would celebrate the milestones we have achieved along with increasing awareness of the challenges that many still face when attempting to vote today.
In the spirit of collaboration, PTK reached out to the Spotlight Drama Club. Together they worked to write, edit, research, and produce two one-act plays. “Election Day,” originally written by Emily Sargent Lewis in 1912, was edited to be Zoom-friendly. “Lines” is an original script written by the drama club and includes many details about voter suppression and other issues facing modern would-be voters. The actors, which included both drama club and PTK members, rehearsed for a month before finally “filming” the plays in late October.
This project is designed to be distributed to area middle and high school students who may be less aware of voting procedures and potential roadblocks for would-be voters. Not only do they get to watch two entertaining plays, but PTK members created a study guide including several interactive games, making the project both educational and FUN!
