Jefferson State, Salvation Army Provide Free Culinary Training

February 3, 2023 sdawkins Blog

Jefferson State in partnership with the Salvation Army and others provided free culinary training for people seeking immediate jobs in the food services industry.

JSCC and the Alabama Community College System worked alongside the state’s hospitality and tourism associations to create the free, customized training, which was completed by the latest class of eight students on Jan. 27 at the Salvation Army Education and Workforce Center in Birmingham.

Chef Kenneth Moore and Chef Emil Boackle of Jefferson State’s Culinary and Hospitality Institute led the training along with Career Coach Deborah Foster from the college’s Center for Workforce Education.

Training participants earn the ACCS Credential from Jefferson State that indicates they are ready to work—and also provides a discount in tuition or articulated credit for future classes.

They also earn the ServSafe credential.

The training covers skills needed to work in the food industry:

  • Customer Service
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Knife Skills
  • Purchasing Procedures
  • Kitchen Safety
  • Beverage Service
  • Food Storage

Skills for Success is part of the ACCS Innovation Center, a division of the Alabama Community College System, brings together the state’s community colleges, business and industry, and community partners to deliver rapid, industry-recognized non-credit training within some of the state’s most in-demand career fields.
