Interview with the Author—Dr. Jeffrey Pouncey

Midnight Tear, a novel by Dr. Jefferey Pouncey, psychology professor at Jefferson State Community College, tells the gripping story of the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, a story once lost to history.  The Beta Lambda Delta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa adapted Dr. Pouncey’s novel into a screenplay and produced it as a radio show.  Please join us as we explore this tragic yet important event in American history—a story of loss, pain, and resilience.

CONTEST OPEN TO STUDENTS IN GRADES 8-12 ONLY

DEADLINE: DECEMBER 15, 2024

After viewing the play MIDNIGHT TEAR, write a 300–500-word essay in which you answer one of the following questions:

1. The Tulsa Race Massacre occurred over 100 years ago. Why is it important to learn about that event today?

2. Why was the story of the Tulsa Race Massacre covered up? What can we do to uncover it and other buried stories?

3. Relate the Tulsa Race Massacre to a social justice issue today. What will you do to make the world a better place?

Essays will be judged with students’ names and identifying information removed. The author of the winning essay will receive a cash prize of $300!
