The Patient Care Technician 11-week course is designed to prepare entry-level graduates that promote and protect the health and safety of patients through the delivery of compassionate, quality health care services, and the promotion of health care standards. Graduates of the program are qualified to work in a variety of settings in hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, long-term care and assisted living facilities, hospice, home care, and other health care facilities.

The PCT Scholarship Program is part of the Jeremiah’s Hope initiative that is a collaboration between Jefferson State and Ascension St. Vincent’s, with the college’s Center for Workforce Education providing training in various healthcare programs and wrap-around services. More than 60 students have graduated from the program since the collaboration began in 2020.

Partners also include the Women’s Foundation of Alabama and Childcare Resources. Thanks to The Women’s Foundation of Alabama, class participants received scholarships to cover registration fees, books, and even transportation and child care expenses.

The class that received certificates of completion on Nov. 30 was the first to train at Jefferson State’s new Southside Birmingham training facility.

Andy Bell, president and chief development officer for the Ascension St. Vincent’s Foundation, said Jeremiah’s Hope “equips and empowers students to serve in healthcare roles.”

Student Success Coach Christine McLain was unable to attend the ceremony, but Center for Workforce Education Director Leah Bigbee congratulated the graduates and read McLain’s prepared remarks.

“As you begin your careers as Patient Care Technicians and grow your career in the medical field, understand the importance of your role in people’s lives and embrace your ability to have a positive impact on the health of others,” McLain said in the remarks. “You hold a very important role. Be the button that pulls things together and makes a difference in the lives of others.”
