Jefferson State Speech Team Members Jacob Humphries and Rich Quarles earn top honors in Texas Tournament
Jefferson State’s Speech and Debate Team members Nathan Wright, Rich Quarles and Jacob Humphries attended the Gulf Coast Debate Camp in Baytown Texas July 27-29.
At this two and a half day camp, debaters from five colleges and universities participated in an intense hands-on workshop to learn how to be successful in debates.
Debaters participated in speaking exercises and competed in a mini-tournament on the last day of the workshop and were assigned points for their efforts. At the conclusion of the weekend, Debate Captain Jacob Humphries was ranked first among all novice debaters and Speech and Debate Team President Rich Quarles was ranked second.
This year, the International Public Debate Association (IPDA) is participating in the “Debate for Life” campaign and will raise money for childhood cancer research. As part of this effort, the debate workshop hosts will sponsor Jacob Humphries and Rich Quarles throughout the year and will donate money to the “Fight Like Emilie” Foundation for every point they win at a regular season tournament.
The Jefferson State Speech and Debate Team will kick off their season by competing at the University of Southern Mississippi during the last weekend of September.
