Student Nurse Apprenticeship Information

Options: Jefferson State Community College offers an Associate in Applied Science-Registered Nursing (RN)

 Eligibility Requirements for the Student Nurse Apprenticeship

    1. Must be an active, current student at Jefferson State Community
    2. Must be currently enrolled in NUR 112 for fall, spring, or summer
    3. Must successfully complete NUR 112 and progress to NUR
    4. Submit an apprenticeship application. A list of students who meet the minimum qualifications for apprenticeship is given to participating healthcare facilities, who select and hire apprentices based on the number of open positions All apprentices must sign an apprenticeship agreement.
    5. Student apprentices must commit to working for on the job learning at the healthcare facility for the entirety of the nursing program. Included in working days are clinical days students are performing for nursing program clinical requirements.
    6. Student apprentices must apply to the Alabama Board of Nursing for an apprentice permit ($50 application fee applies).

Clinical Hour Requirements:

  1. Student apprentices are paid for clinical Student apprentices are not paid for on-campus classes, labs, or simulation.
  2. Student apprentices will work one on one with a registered nurse from the healthcare facility. Students will be held accountable to the same clinical requirements as non-apprentice students in the program.
Associate Degree Nursing (RN) Program
Semester Course(s) Clinical Requirements
1 NUR 112 Apprenticeship will not start until semester 2 of nursing school (NUR 113).
2 NUR 113 135 hours of med-surg less any instructor led simulations. Usually 2 days.
3 NUR 114 135 hours Total; 119 medical-surgical less instructor simulations Usually 2 days. 16 hours psych;
  NUR 115 45 hours practicum, *Med-Surg, *LTC, *Community Health (Volunteer) *Simulation
4 NUR 211 119 critical care hours and/or ER; 16 hours OB less simulation hours
5   NUR 221 120 practicum hours (Typically med-surg or ICU). 24 hours CDP less simulation hours; 8 hours Think Cultural Health, 16 hours Pediatrics, 12 hours ICU, Med-Surg, or Simulation

Orientation and Apprenticeship Fairs

  • July 27th Student Nurse Apprenticeship Information Session: An overview of apprenticeship programs will be provided to the potential apprentice students.

Facility representatives invited to set up tables/displays in designated area and speak with students regarding their facility’s apprenticeship opportunities. Apprenticeship Applications are provided.

Meeting held at the JSCC Shelby Campus at 10 AM in the multi-purpose room.

  1. Due Dates
    1. Apprenticeship applications due to JSCC: August 2,
    2. Applicant Information to Facilities: August 4th,
    3. Decisions by facility sent to JSCC: August 25,
  2. Onboarding
    1. Journey Worker/Mentor Onboarding: Ongoing; dates and locations TBD; prior to clinical start
    2. Apprentice Onboarding: TBD onsite at NEP
    3. Facility Onboarding of Apprentice: TBD
    4. Official start date: May not start until orientations complete and ABN permits approved
    5. Required documents from facilities: Journey Worker (Mentor) to provide information requested by NEP before first apprentice clinical start date (NEP will provide forms for information needed).
