Students completed Heavy Equipment Operator (Skid Steer) training thanks to partnerships among Jefferson State, Dunn Construction, Thompson Tractor, and the Alabama Community College System’s Skills for Success initiative.

After self-paced, interactive online learning, the students completed the course with a skills lab on Jan. 19-20 at the college’s Chilton-Clanton Campus.

Dunn Construction sent employees through the training, and Thompson Tractor donated skid steers. The instructor was Alan Smith with Jefferson State Center for Workforce Education Training Coordinator Alex Blevins overseeing.

Through online coursework and hands-on lab training, operators learn equipment applications, attachments, operating controls, preventive maintenance requirements, and basic operating techniques. This course is designed for students interested in a career in construction, heavy equipment, and earthmoving equipment operations. Operators of all skill levels learn the concepts, objectives, and safety practices required for operating skid steers in construction zone settings. Operators learn about issues related to road and highway construction. After completing the course, participants get 16 hours of hands-on equipment operation training.

Upon successfully completing both online and hands-on portions of the course, participants receive an ACCS credential.
