SGA Quarantine Talent Show

So… you’ve been cooped up in your house since March. What did you do with all your newfound time on the weekends? Exercise? Binge a dozen shows on Netflix? Perfect a new talent? If the answer is the first two, we can’t help you with that, but if you developed a new talent, now is the time to SHOW IT OFF! The Student Government Association presents the SGA Quarantine Talent Show!

This virtual talent show will let you show off your talent safely from your own home. Submit a video of your talent and you could win a one-semester scholarship for tuition and fees!

Why a talent show?

With so many events being canceled, the SGA has been looking for a way to get students involved, albeit virtually, but the real reason is that this will be FUN! Not to mention, a one-semester scholarship is on the line. Who will be the winner?

Rules!

  • Each entry must be an individual entry – no groups.
  • The video must not be longer than four minutes in length.
  • The video / talent must be appropriate for an audience of all ages.
  • You must be a currently enrolled student or dual enrollment student to enter.
  • The deadline to submit is October 16th, 2020.

Prizes

  • First place – one semester scholarship (or $100 Walmart gift card, if winner is already on a JSCC institutional scholarship)
  • Runners up – Walmart gift card and other cool prizes!

Tips for Videoing

  • It is a good idea to record a short test to see how it looks and sounds before recording the actual video.
  • Set your phone on a solid surface at eye level. Do not hold your phone in your hand.
  • Record in “Landscape” (your phone is on its side) not “Portrait” (where your phone is upright)
  • Your phone should be about 3 feet away from you (unless you need a wider shot to see the talent). The camera should be centered and look something like this:
    Record Head Shoulders Screen
  • Set up in a well-lit room. Bright light sources (windows, lamps) should be facing you so your face is lit. Avoid filming with a bright window or lamp behind you.
  • Speak loudly and clearly.
  • Recording in a quiet room usually works best. Be aware of the noises around you that you may not usually notice (vehicle traffic, wind, a clicking ceiling fan, a humming dishwasher, etc.). These small noises can turn a really nice video into something that isn’t so nice.
  • Clean your eyeglasses prior to filming.
  • Look directly into the camera of your phone, not into your own eyes on the phone.
  • Be aware of the background. Please clean up, close open doors, etc. Avoid distracting backgrounds.
  • Record everything in one “take.” If you stumble, keep going – pretend you are in front of an audience.
  • Review the video after recording to ensure that everything is correct.

    Tips for Submitting

  • Keep videos under 4 minutes.
  • Save your work on OneDrive, Google Drive, or YouTube and create a link to the video.
  • Complete form below to enter your video.
