Pioneer Pantry Food Distribution - April 15 & 17 Pioneer Pantry Food Distribution - April 15 & 17

Jefferson State’s Pioneer Pantry is hosting two food distributions on the Jefferson Campus this Thursday, April 15 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Saturday April 17 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Volunteers will distribute pre-packaged food bags in front of the Fitzgerald Student Center (2601 Carson Road, Birmingham, AL 35215). As always, the number of people in your household will determine how many bags you are eligible to receive. During the distributions, all recipients must remain inside their vehicles; volunteers wearing masks will pass food bags through the window or place them in the back seat or trunk of each recipient’s vehicle.

First-time pantry customers can register in advance by going to www.jeffersonstate.edu/pantry-registration.

Existing customers who have received food bags in the past should not register online again—instead, they should contact Matt Boehm by text (205-529-4443) or email (mboehm@jeffersonstate.edu) and let him know whether they plan to pick bags up on Thursday, April 15 or Saturday, April 17.

She is the author of the novel Drinking From A Bitter Cup and has published in numerous literary journals. Angela’s play, Anna’s Wings, was selected in 2016 to be a part of the IndyFringe DivaFest and her play, Flossie Bailey Takes a Stand, was part of the Indiana Bicentennial Celebration at the Indiana Repertory Theatre. She also wrote and produced the play It Is Well, and she was the co-playwright with Ashya Thomas on a play called Black Lives Matter (Too). In the spring of 2018, Angela co-wrote a musical with her colleague, Peter Davis, called Dear Bobby: The Musical, that was part of the 2018 OnyxFest in Indianapolis, IN. Her book of poetry called House Repairs was published by Negative Capability Press in the fall of 2018, and in the fall of 2019, she directed and produced a play she wrote called Still Singing Those Weary Blues.

Her new novel, When Stars Rain Down, to be published by Thomas Nelson, an imprint of HarperCollins, will be released on April 13. For more information about Angela, go to her website www.angelajacksonbrown.com.

The theme for the 2021 Red Mountain Reading Series is “crossing genres.” Our presenters this year have all had success in more than one field of literary expression. Their presentations will discuss their experiences finding inspiration and working in multiple genres.

Speech & Debate Team Ranks 3rd in Nation The Jeff Speech & Debate Team Ranks 3rd in Nation

The Jefferson State Debate Team won 2nd place in Community College Sweepstakes in the IPDA National Debate Tournament, held on April 9-11.

This tournament was virtual this year and drew over 300 students from 60 colleges and universities from 24 different states. In addition to placing 2nd among community colleges as a team, novice debater Kylie Jordan and Junior Varsity debater Daniel Davis made it into elimination rounds. In addition, Jacob Davidson, Blake Denney and Zavoun Watts all had strong showings that contributed to the 2nd place win. Team members Heaven Sheppard, MJ Dailey, Cameron Hodge, Kelvin Thomas and Ali Richard supported the team by serving as judges and research assistants.

The International Public Debate Association also gives season-long awards, which are based on the cumulative points won by each team and individual debater from tournaments hosted from September through March. Season-long Awards (2020-2021) for Jefferson State out of 150 college and university debate programs and over 1000 students include being ranked 3rd among all community colleges in the nation and ranking as the 6th Novice Squad in the nation among both colleges and universities. In addition, Jacob Davidson finished the year ranked as the 3rd Novice Debater in the country, out of 303 novice debaters, both in college and university programs.

The JSCC Debate Team is looking for new members and full scholarships are available. Please contact Dr. Janice Ralya (jralya@jeffersonstate.edu) for more information.
